What is speech & language therapy?

Speech language therapy is specialist support for children who experience challenges with communication — but it's about a lot more than just speech.

A speech language therapist works with children across all areas of communication: understanding language, expressing thoughts and ideas, social communication, literacy, and finding alternative ways to communicate when speech alone isn't enough.

At Wild About Words, therapy isn't about drilling sounds or hitting milestones on a chart. It's about helping your child connect — with you, with the people they love, and with the world around them. Whether your child is just beginning to find their voice or needs support building more complex language skills, speech language therapy meets them exactly where they are.

And yes - that counts whether they use words, a device, signs, or a combination of all three.

  • Reach out and book your free 15-minute phone consultation. This is a relaxed, no-obligation chat where you can share what's going on for your child, ask any questions, and get a feel for whether Wild About Words is the right fit. No jargon, no pressure. Just a conversation.

  • If we decide to move forward together, we'll start with an assessment session. This gives us a clear picture of your child's communication strengths, challenges, and goals which forms the foundation for everything that follows. You'll receive either a summary or a full report depending on what your family needs

  • Using what we learn in the assessment, we'll put together a therapy plan that's tailored specifically to your child — their interests, their environment, and your family's goals. We'll walk you through it together so you know exactly what we're working towards and why.

  • Sessions begin - play-based, child-led, and built around connection. You're not just a bystander here. We'll keep you in the loop at every step, share strategies you can use at home, and check in regularly to make sure things are working. Because the best outcomes happen when families are part of the process.
